Sniff...sniff, sniff

Yes, I'm shedding tears right now because today is Jack's 5th birthday!!  These are tears of joy I promise you but where have those 5 years gone?!!  Seriously, it has gone way.  too.  fast.  Here is why we ALL love Jack and some Jack highlights!

*He loves trains and is so knowledgeable about them!  Last night we watched the most boring documentary about the history of trains.  He loved it!  The rest of us did not.  It reminded me of the films we watched in elementary school that were actually on a film reel and had the monotone voice that slowly put us all to sleep!  But, it was so precious watching Jack learn about trains.  The rest of the night we heard the facts about the Rock Island railroad.
*  He sometimes talks in a very deep voice when he tells us what he's about ready to do.  "I'm going to get my shoes on guys."  And his voice starts normal and gradually gets deeper.
*He's starting to read to us and asks us constantly what letters each words start with, sounding out words, and spells out words for us.  He loves to read to Will, especially "Who Stole the Cookie from the Cookie Jar?"
*He loves to help around the house....please don't jinx it by writing this!  He vacuums, dusts, and unloads the dishwasher.  He gets forks for us at dinner, puts away his laundry, and does all of this with his sweet smile!  Such a great helper!
*He's a mini-Eric!  Everyone tells me this by just looking at him, but I see it in his mannerisms, the way he walks, talks, and plays.  He's calm, patient, and explains things so sweetly, just like Eric!  When Eric works out in the yard, he has a Jack shadow the entire time!  So cute!!  And he's skin and bones...like Eric!
*He growls when he's mad, which isn't cute but it is.  I love think it's so funny, but only at certain times, like when he does it at anyone but me.  (He usually does it at me).
*  He's the best big brother EVER!!  Molly and Will love him more than anything!  Will calls everyone Jack, even Molly, and runs towards him every morning after Jack wakes up and everyday when we pick up Jack from school, Will gets all excited, kicking his feet and shouting, "Jack, Jack, Jack!!"  Someone told me recently that when Molly is with Jack, it's almost like she's with her security blanket because she's looking at him for guidance, protection, and calmness.  I want a big brother like Jack!
*He finds joy and happiness in the littlest things in life, which reminds me daily that it truly is the little things that matter the most!  "Mom, it's a beautiful day!"  "It's Ms. Sherri's trash day tomorrow, wow, she's lucky!"  "We need to call Papa and let him know that KU is playing  in Texas!"  "Molly, you are so lucky to go to Kindermusik and play the drum!"  "Will, you get to be my little brother!"
*He recently told us to call him J-Man, not Jack.
*He knows how to get anywhere in this big city we call home!  If he's been there twice, he can most likely get you there and home.  It's amazing!  And, the whole way there, "That's where we went for dinner one time."  "Is that the Petsmart we got Lucy's fish food?"  "We're almost to daddy's work, there it is!!"  He knows the Beltway, 610, knows that 45 takes us to Kansas, and that 1-10 is by our house, but first you need to get on 99.  Love it!
Love this kid so much!  Here he is having fun at Molly's birthday party!

Happy Birthday Jack!  We are honored being your parents and you make the world a better place!  Never change Jack Jack!  We love you!

Rainbow cupcake DISASTER!!

Maybe I'm being a smidge dramatic, but really!  They did not turn out as cute as the pictures.  Cupcakes look so sweet and easy to make, but they're not!  They are tricky little things and there is no way of realizing it until you're halfway through the recipe and can't stop!

1.  Where are the pictures of the screaming toddler, wanting to be held?  Hmm?  I decide to put mine in his booster chair and move it right next to me at the counter with his snack.  Genius, especially because Jack and Molly were standing on their chairs at the counter.  He could be just like them.  Except, he threw his snack all over the kitchen and kept turning off the oven.  Smart me figured he wouldn't touch the buttons he's been trying to touch HIS. ENTIRE. LIFE.  Genius.
2.  I ran out of food coloring.  I just assumed we had enough, but we didn't.  Our rainbow cupcakes were without the color blue.  I had barely enough to make purple and it look more brown.  Jack kindly pointed that out, "I thought blue and red made purple, not brown."
3.  I also ran out of cupcake liners.
4.  I made a healthier recipe for the cupcakes, from the Jessica Seinfield Deceptively Delicious cookbook (one of my favorites to get ideas, some of the recipes are...odd.)  Here is the recipe for the Yellow Cake.  The recipe calls for plain, banana, or vanilla yogurt, but I tried Greek Yogurt with honey.  First, yum.  Second, I gave all three kids a lick and they started a licking war over the lid.  They acted like this was the best yogurt EVER.  Coming from the same three kids who didn't touch the berry smoothie I made for them the day before.  Where are the pictures Perfect Blog of your kids fighting over the yogurt?
5.  I'm mentally challenged when it comes making cupcakes.  I just can't figure out how much to put in cups.  And, I couldn't figure out how much of each color to put in to make the funky  rainbow.  The cupcakes were lopsided.  No way could I post pictures of them, they looked horrible! (But tasted oh so delicious!  Light and fluffy, yum!)
6.  My kids also had a licking war over the spatula with the leftover cake batter.  They didn't eat dinner that night.
7.  I only made six cupcakes.  I waved the white flag.

Lessons learned:
1.  Make sure I have enough food coloring and cupcake liners when making cupcakes (A helpful tip from the hubs.  No sympathy or encouragement for cooking with the kids, just the cold hard facts)
2.  I'll make a cake the next time.

I think I might rename my blog to the opposite of Martha, because that is exactly what I am!

Who are these people?

So, I'm totally reevaluating my life and decided to try to up my Blog Game.  Posting daily, adding in tips, recipes, and activities I do with the kids, you know, bragging about how wonderful of a wife and mom I am.  Heck, I might as well try to get paid, I've read people who get paid to write their blogs, I could totally do better.  I might even throw in a picture or two, but baby steps first.  I decided Spring Break would be the week, luckily, that's this week!
Monday rolls around and we have a pajama day!  Yes!  A great way to start my new project in life!  We all wear our pajamas, build a fort in our play room, even a few thunderstorms added to the fun of the day!  Well, after nap time (and a few tons of laundry washed and put away, score!), Will wakes up with a fever and just needs love.  Poor baby!  My plans for making St. Patrick's day crafts are put on hold and I cuddle with him while we all watch The Imagination Movers in Concert for the 100th time (BTW, what is Joey Fatone doing on there?) with the other two kids.  That night, while up with him and his 103 fever, I start looking at blogs for the inspiration for my new and improved and came up with one thing:  Who are these people?  When do they have time to do these crafts, recipes, homeschooling (seriously, have nothing against it but how?!  Why?!!), do-it-yourself home projects, workout, take pictures to post on the blog and update their blog ALMOST daily?!!!  Seriously, who are they and what am I doing wrong?  Really?  I can barely make it through the day of laundry, meal making, cleaning, and being the calm, patient wife and mother I am (I'm joking, opposite of patient)!  I thought I was on top of things by doing one St. Patrick's Day craft.
Tuesday, a new day and not much inspiration from the other blogs, but hope!  I found a blog from a fellow working mom and figured if she can make these things with her kids and work and blog, I can TOO!  We actually made hand print leprechauns, homemade pudding, and had a sick little Puggy Bear with the flu!  A pretty good day, and found a home decorating site where I feel like I can do it and not bitter ( really people, stop the bragging, you're awesome OK?  Now go make some homemade biscuits, plant your organic garden fertilized by your own compost, take your children to yoga, and refinish that 1892 window frame your turning into a picture frame).
Wednesday, a brand new child back from the Land of Sick!  Bring on the Rainbow Cupcakes!  This is from the mom who stays home and the pictures are so pretty!  The kids were so excited and so was I!  I'll post about that adventure soon!  What...a two part post?!  Crazy talk!

One of our favorite questions around here is "Why?!"  All five us ask it throughout the day for many different reasons.  Eric and I usually ask, "Why would you do that?  What were you thinking?"  (The last question is what I say the most, even though I know my children weren't thinking at the time.)  My children usually ask, "Why are we going in the car?  Why are we eating this for breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner?  Why are getting Jack from school?  Why is the bathroom dirty?  (Really?)  Why does Will wear diapers?  Why is it hot?  Why is it cold?  Why are there so many dishes in the sink?  Why is your car black?  Why are you wearing a dress?"  I could go on all day!  Here are some common "Whys" I ask myself....

Why is it when I vacuum, the boys are obsessed and loving to help me vacuum, but Molly magically disappears?  Does she know that in the future she will vacuum more then she wants to and is waiting as long as possible to start vacuuming?  Jack just started vacuuming for me and it's a wonderful experience watching him work so hard and have fun!

Why, then, did Molly choose a toy vacuum with her birthday money?  She loves it, but both boys love it more!

Why does Will always, ALWAYS, take off his right shoe and sock?  In the car, in shopping carts, at the park, at church, EVERYWHERE!  He just got bigger shoes and he enjoys wearing his left shoe and sock...why, Will, why?

Why is Jack growing up too fast?  He loves learning his letters and writing and he's just starting to put letter sounds together to create and spell words!  Love it!  We go to his Kindergarten Orientation on the 31st...why?!

Why is he almost 5?!!

Why is Molly 3 going on 13?  I can no longer pick out her clothes without her help and she is back to wearing a tutu everyday!  Love it but it's becoming a long process!  She asks last night why I didn't bring her purse with us and when she can get a phone like daddy's.  We also got her some sandals and that was just a long process finding shoes we both like and then finding her size...and I had all 3 kids...never again!

Why is Jack freaking out about what to wear?  Hello, you're a boy, why are you flipping out over wearing swishy pants and not jeans?  Ever since the age of 2 1/2, he has loved jeans, meaning he wants to wear them everyday, unless it's the summer and then he'll wear jean or khaki shorts.  The other day, I was a little behind on laundry (10 loads later, I'm done!) and all of his jeans were dirty.  So, silly me, laid out swishy pants and a shirt and was met with tears and yelling.  It was a long morning, but he wore his swishy pants!

Why is it when my kids go to bed late, like anytime after 8, they wake up earlier then usual?  Now, their normal bedtime is 7-7:30 and wake up around 6-6:30 (I know you're jealous!), but imagine putting them down later and expecting them to wake up around 7...not so much!  They will wake up at 5:30!  Why?!!!  It's sad when you think 6:30 is sleeping in and are happy to sleep until 6:30.

Why is coffee so gosh darn delicious?

Why do my kids have so many clothes and Eric and I are wearing clothes from college?

Why did my air conditioner in my car have to break when we live in the most humid city?  Hello 80 degrees on March 11!

Why, when I go to get paint color samples for our dining room and pick out colors that say gold, when the color is on the wall, it's not gold but mustard?  I want gold, people, gold!

Why are the weeds in our yard taking over slowly but surly?

Why can't I stop asking the question why?  This is fun!  But, need to clean up the dishes from dinner last night that are still in the sink and then get us all ready for the day! Yea!
